The Old Stone Mill Center LLC
The Old Stone Mill Center is a Zero Waste Maker space. We are an all volunteer
organization dedicated to reuse, upcycling, re-making and redistribution of surplus
materials primarily from local industries. We work with schools, local industry, town
officials, individuals, artists and makers, teachers and schools, recycling and reuse
organizations and overseas shipping partners.
Our 28,000 square foot building is primarily dedicated to cold storage in the winter with just 9% heated in that season. Storage is an absolutely essential part of upcycling.
We currently house maker space workshops which include machines for metal
fabrication, bicycle and sewing machine repair, a sewing center, picture frame
upcycling and equipment for framing, a printmaking teaching studio, and a fabric sale
and upcycled art materials sales area.
We are taking in 15 tons a year of linen discards from the laundry industry. This has
been recouped for 8 years resulting in 120 tons so far. These discards were formerly
combusted in Pittsfield, MA until we forged this unusual partnership with Aladco Linen
Services. Bed sheets, uniforms, tablecloths, scrubs and more from the hotel, hospital
and restaurants industries they supply.
Much of this is re-homed and used in hospitals in Africa.
We offer classes, host teachers for PD day, tours and internship/volunteer
opportunities. We also work with Youth Center Inc and local kids.
Our long term goals are to create a vibrant community of all ages and abilities to
elevate and uphold responsible stewardship of materials generated by humans. This
process is fun and satisfying and we expect it to continue as a legacy building
over multiple generations.
